Job Description
A part of the Army communications maintenance team, the cable systems installer/maintainer is primarily responsible for installing, operating and performing maintenance on cable and wire communications systems, communication security devices and related equipment. These responsibilities are tied to effective communications necessary for successful Army operations. Other duties include:
• Performing tests on cable communications
• Testing circuits and detecting line faults
• Calibrating and aligning equipment components
• Stringing cables between utility poles
These responsibilities are tied to effective communications necessary for successful Army operations.

Training
To become an Army cable systems installer/maintainer, you must complete nine weeks of basic training, which consists of basic soldiering skills, and seven weeks of advanced individual training. Classroom and on-the-job instruction includes:
• Practice with the equipment
• Principles of mechanics, electronics and electricity
• Procedures on preventive maintenance
• Line installation and wiring techniques
• Policies and procedures relating to communication security

An ideal candidate for a cable systems installer/maintainer should:
• Be interested in working with related equipment
• Have an aptitude for problem solving

In time, you may achieve the advanced level for a cable systems installer/maintainer and be responsible for supervision and training others. Your duties may also involve:
• Planning and supervising construction and installation
• Interpreting and updating line route maps and overlays
