| Job Description |
The Coast Guard machinery technician may be assigned a post on a cutter, boat or shore station. This specialist is primarily responsible for operating and maintaining a variety of machinery, from gas or diesel engines to environmental support systems, such as those for heating and air conditioning. Duties also include work using computers and computer systems.
Training
Nearly every Coast Guard enlisted soldier undergoes eight weeks of basic training, which consists of basic skills needed for Coast Guard activities. Advanced individual training is usually required for specialization. The length of time needed for advanced training varies depending on the area of specialization. To become a Coast Guard machinery technician, you must either undergo an additional 12 weeks of training at an onshore facility or on the job.

- Have normal color vision
- Be interested in mechanics, math, electricity and machine shop
- Be able to use the necessary tools |
