| Veterans Have High Mental Health Needs |
According to the American Psychiatric Association (APA), Veteran’s Day should be an opportunity to not only thank veterans for their sacrifices and courage in fighting for our country, but should also cause us to reflect on the needs these veterans have for mental health services. The Department of Defense has named November Warrior Care month to highlight the needs for all service members and their families to evaluate the mental health of the soldiers, including testing for Post-traumatic Stress Disorder, traumatic brain injury and depression. The APA recognized Give An Hour, a non-profit group that gives military members and their family members free mental health services, applauding such efforts in caring for our veterans and active military personnel. Carolyn Robinowitz is a doctor and past president of the APA. She noted that even after physical wounds are healed, there might be mental wounds that continue to need attention. She pointed out that combat conditions are challenging on a number of levels. She noted that after combat responsibilities are over, the mental health challenges still exist and affect all the interactions a soldier has. Robinowitz said she joined Give an Hour because she saw the need soldiers have, and she wanted to make a difference in their lives.
